Digital Subtation

Digital substations represent an inevitable trend in the digital transformation and development of the power sector globally—and in Vietnam in particular.

A digital substation is a type of substation that employs optoelectronic technology to convert measurement, control, status, and alarm signals primary equipment located outdoors (at the intermediate cabinet or device level) digital signals. These signals are transmitted via converter units and fiber optic systems to relay/BCU devices installed in protection and control panels within the central control room.

The transmission and reception of data outdoor devices to the control center are fully digitized using the IEC 61850-9-2 Process Bus technology.

Advantages of digital substation
ENHANCING SYSTEM RELIABILITY

Digital devices ensure self-monitoring and diagnostic capabilities,
minimizing incidents caused by copper cable failures.

TIME OPTIMIZATION

Reduce construction, installation, and testing time. Minimize power outage duration during system upgrades, expansions, equipment replacement, and maintenance.

OPTIMIZE MATERIALS AND MANPOWER

Reduce the volume of materials and labor required for construction, installation, wiring, testing, and maintenance.

IMPROVE OPERATIONAL READINESS

Fiber optic data transmission facilitates future scalability and easy expansion of the substation.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY IMPROVEMENT

Copper cables are replaced with safer fiber optic cables, helping to minimize the risk of electrical short circuits.

ENHANCE AESTHETICS

Enhancing aesthetics in design, construction, and operation.

History of construction and development of AIT GROUP's Digital Substation
With the spirit of continuous learning, anticipating new development trends, proactively researching and mastering technology, AIT Group and strategic partner GE Grid Automation have cooperated to research and successfully apply the Digital Substation solution (using Process Bus technology standard IEC 61850-9-2) to substations inside and outside EVN.
